Multiattribute Evaluation Reference Effects: A Reply to Barron and John

In a recent paper, Yates and Jagacinski (1979) presented evidence for what was referred to as a "reference effect" in the process by which people evaluate multiattribute alternatives. Barton and John (1980) argue that it is inappropriate to characterize the observed phenomenon as a reference effect. We wish to take this opportunity to clarify what the issues are and what the data and analyses of Yates and Jagacinski and Barron and John really have to say about those issues.
